The holidays are around the corner, and for some of us, the school gates have already closed, which means more food, more snacking, and more thinking! 😅
Let’s be real — the cost of living these days? E choke. With three kids and one hungry husband (lol), I've had to become very intentional about what I buy during grocery runs. Some things that used to be "staples" in my house don’t even make it to my list anymore. Why? Because I've found smarter, more affordable, and even healthier alternatives. Let’s dive into some of them 👇🏽
❌ Cereal
Yes, it’s quick and convenient… but not filling at all. I mean, one box is gone in 2-3 sittings and nobody is truly full. Plus, prices are skyrocketing. These days, I go for oats or homemade pap with milk — more filling, nutritious, and cost-friendly.
❌ Instant Noodles
Another convenient option, but it takes a lot to feed my tribe! Imagine using 10 packs of noodles (₦3,000), just for one meal 😩. Now, I do pasta (₦1,000) instead — add veggies and egg or sardine, and boom, one hearty meal that stretches far and feeds everyone.
❌ Packaged Juices
Honestly, these juices are just expensive sugar water. I’d rather make zobo with pineapple or hibiscus and sweeten it lightly with dates. Tastes great, lasts long, and I know exactly what’s inside. Other options are homemade juices, smoothie and tigernut drinks.
❌ Frozen French Fries
Let’s not lie, they taste nice — but the price? For what? I cut up fresh Irish or sweet potatoes, season and bake or fry at home. Way cheaper, and I can make a big batch and freeze.
❌ Bottled Sauce & Mayonnaise
I used to stock up on these — ketchup, mayonnaise, etc. Now I make simple dips and sauces with tomatoes, onions, pepper, and a little spice. Even my kids love dipping with yam and chips.
❌ Store-Bought Snacks
Crackers, cookies, all those packaged treats? We now bake at home! Cupcakes, chin-chin, or even pancakes with a touch of honey. Cheaper, healthier, and more fun because the kids help.
👩🏽🍳 Little Tip:
I now go shopping with a list based on my weekly meal plan, not vibes and cravings. It saves time and money, and I always come home feeling like a budgeting boss mama. 🙌🏽
What about you, mama?
What have you stopped buying, and what did you replace it with? Let’s share and learn from each other this holiday. 💛
